Why is SUP so Popular?

If you are reading this, chances are you are already an avid stand up paddle board (SUP) enthusiast, or very intrigued by this sport. Stand up paddle boarding has grown increasingly popular, but particularly in the last 12 months as people are trying to find new ways to enjoy the outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. I mean, what screams social distancing more than floating solo on the water?

So what’s the deal with stand up paddle boarding anyways and why are so many people jumping on the SUP train? Whether you’re looking for a reminder or a reason to try paddle boarding, here are a few things to motivate you to get out there and try it! I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Reason No. 1 - Exercise

Looking for a relatively low-impact workout that helps strengthen and tone muscles? Then look no further! Stand up paddle boarding is an excellent workout that targets your whole body. It’s like a full meal deal kind of activity that engages your core muscles and helps build and tone your arms, legs, back and shoulders. You can even get creative on your board and challenge yourself by trying squats, planks, yoga, etc. The great part about paddle boarding is if you get tired, you have options: stand, kneel or even sit if you want! Whatever floats your boat…. or paddleboard in this case. The glory about paddle boarding is you can take ‘er easy or spice it up if you’re craving more of a workout. It is a great sport for all ages.

Reason No. 2 - De-Stress

Stress? What’s that? Let’s face it, the world can throw some mighty hurdles our way and it can be hard to balance it all. Taking time for yourself is so important to disconnect, recharge and just plain relax. Kiss your computer or phone goodbye for a while and take advantage of the beautiful outdoors. There is nothing better than the sounds and views that mother nature has to offer. The soft sound of the paddle moving through the water, the beautiful views that surround you, being present with yourself and your thoughts can all make for a beautiful remedy to de-stress.

Reason No. 3 - Explore

Oh, the places you’ll go! Being on the water gives you a totally different perspective and view of things. You know that body of water you may drive by daily? Think about how amazing it would be to be on it! Check out any river, lake, canal or ocean coast from your board. SUP is not just a summer sport. Depending on where you are, you can be SUPing all year long with the proper gear.

Reason No. 4 - Connecting

If you are craving some alone time, or want to connect with a friend, family member or even your furry pal, SUP offers a great excuse to get out there! Nobody to go with? Check out local SUP rentals that may offer group tours, yoga classes, meditation, or private lessons.

Reason No. 5 - Versatility

Not just a paddle board. Catch a wave or two on your SUP at a local beach. Practice meditation or yoga on a sunset paddle. Test your strength and balance by trying some of your favourite workouts on your board. Go fishing, or paddle to a remote area to camp for the night. Heck, pack a snack and a book, and just float if that’s your jam. Basically, what I’m saying is that there are a variety of ways to enjoy your stand up paddle board other than simply just going for ‘a paddle’.

Stand up paddle boards range in price point and style depending on what you are looking for- hard, soft, surf, allround, touring or race.  Check out Types of SUP to see a breakdown on different types of boards to determine which one best suits your style and needs!

So there ya go, SUPing is an amazing way to reap all of the benefits: a great workout, destresser, sharing new experiences and adventures with pals and exploring some very cool spots that you may not have otherwise seen. Try it once and I can guarantee it won’t be your last!
